This decaf espresso from Small Batch Coffee Roasters is made using the Ethyl Acetate (EA) method, a type of decaffeination that retains the coffee’s natural flavour. The coffee stems from from the Huila region of Colombia, known for producing high-quality beans. The result of high quality bean and method of decaffeinating makes for a smooth, rich coffee with tasting notes of chocolate, toffee, and a hint of citrus brightness. Ideal for espresso but versatile enough for other brewing methods, this decaf delivers a full-bodied experience without sacrificing taste.
Tasting Notes:
Chocolate, toffee, citrus brightness.
Decaffeination Process
The Ethyl Acetate (EA) method, used for this decaf, is a natural process derived from sugarcane. Ethyl acetate bonds with caffeine in the green beans, effectively removing it while preserving the coffee’s flavour. The beans are soaked in an EA solution, which is flushed and repeated until a decaffeination level of 97% is reached. Afterward, the beans are steamed to remove any remaining traces of ethyl acetate, ensuring the coffee retains its natural sweetness and complexity, delivering a rich and full-bodied cup.
